Slovakia wants to return to Eurovision in 2025

Quick Facts:
  • Slovakia will not compete in 2024
  • Tentative return set for 2025

After almost a decade without competing, Slovakia has set its return to the international singing competition for 2025.

Slovakia is ready to return to the Eurovision Song Contest, according to Ľuboš Machaj, the Director General of Slovakian broadcaster RTVS. In an interview with Matej Dedinský, Machaj announced the country’s intent to participate in Eurovision 2025, tentatively.

Machaj took charge of RTVS one year ago intent on making changes, with returning to Eurovision as one of his top priorities. “To my surprise, I was expecting greater political pressure,” he told Dedinský.

“In another year – if everything goes without problems – we will enter Eurovision,” Machaj said. “We received relatively good offers for entry.” Discussions are still ongoing at RTVS, as Machaj mentions that the broadcaster is planning to meet “in a few days” to talk about Eurovision.

“We are indeed one of the few countries that does not broadcast Eurovision. Finances are very demanding, and so is preparation,” Machaj said. Money has become a major issue among competing countries as of late.

Slovakia hasn’t participated in Eurovision since 2012, when they placed last in the second semifinal with “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by Max Jason Mai. They have qualified only three of the eight times they’ve competed. Their highest placing is 18th in 1996 with “Kým nás máš” by Marcel Palonder.
