🇨🇾 Despina Olympiou releases soothing single “Apousia”

An end to the absence for Cyprus's 2013 Eurovision star

Cypriot singer Despina Olympiou is back! Her absence is over as the 2013 Eurovision entrant from Cyprus has now released her new single. Apousia is a soothing ballad in Greek with a clear jazz sound to it.

An end to the absence

Apousia, which means “Absence”, is Despina Olympiou’s first single in a while. The 45-year old has been relatively quiet lately. Her latest single brings us a mature sound, with clear jazz influences. The songwriters behind Apousia are Christos Aidonis for the music and Stella Danavasili for the lyrics.

The song speaks of an absent lover in metaphors. Despina tells the story of a lover who has left her and how it has made her feel, ending the song by asking “How to live life without you?”.

Despina Olympiou at Eurovision

Back in 2013, Cyprus internally selected Despina Olympiou for the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden. CyBC chose An Me Thimasai as her entry. Until date, it’s the last time Cyprus failed to qualify for the final. Despina Olympiou finished in fifteenth place in the semifinal with eleven points. It was also the last time the island nation selected a song in Greek to represent them. This year, former OtherView singer Elena Tsagrinou will represent Cyprus with “El Diablo”. Panik Records and CyBC released the song this week.

At the start of her career, Despina Olympiou had great success in her homeland of Cyprus as well as in Greece. During her relationship with 1998 Eurovision entrant Michalis Hatizgiannis, the couple often collaborated on music together. Afterwards, she teamed up with other musicians. Just before going to Eurovision, her collaboration with Stereo Mike, called Den S’Afino Apo Ta Matia Mou, became very succesful. Stereo Mike had represented Greece at Eurovision in Düsseldorf alongside Loukas Yiorkas the year before.

After the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, Despina Olympiou kept releasing music. Now, she’s released a new effort once more: Apousia. You can watch the lyric video below.
