Today we have reviews of the Italian entry, ‘Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente’ by Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro, from Lisa, Miki, Nathan, Riccardo, Rodrigo and Tom. Let’s get started!

The Reviews

Lisa

Five nights of torture where pop music goes to die and pensioners with 50 a day vocals, singing songs without verses are reborn, resulted in this vaguely perky ditty being selected. Ignoring my rage at Annalisa being snubbed yet again, this was one of the better ones in Sanremo this year. Sure it has a political message behind it, but the melody is pleasant and the middle section results in mild toe-tapping. Not one of the worst songs this year.

Miki

Meaningful, emotional, eye opening, current. “Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente” literally ticks so many boxes and I love the fact that it uses a platform like Eurovision to talk about issues important to humanity. At first, I was not the biggest fan of this entry but the more I listened to it the more I learned to appreciate it for what it was.

Nathan

Whilst I can understand the appeal of this to some, on my first listen I didn’t think this song would be the winner of Sanremo based on song quality alone. The fact that this song, with a strong political message, won the Italian selection shows that a lot of Central Europe has the same message to dish out this year: see France, but in a different manner. Social issues may well be à la mode for song lyrics, but for me this doesn’t quite hit it off despite its persistent tempo and infectious beat.

Riccardo

I still haven’t forgiven my countrymates for not picking Annalisa. But at least now I’m happy they will represent my country in Lisbon. I have been a fan of Fabrizio since 2007 and he is incredible. I have listened to the song many times and I love the message and now it’s grown on me. Not sure one listen will be enough for them to do well at Eurovision, though.

Rodrigo

I don’t think this is the most accessible song Italy has sent and definitely not one of the most accessible songs this year, but I love everything about it, particularly the message they are selling here. It’s almost beautifully ironic that a country that has had a, well, controversial platform of politicians winning an election could so happily have this win Sanremo and be sent to compete on such an internatinal platform. Musically, I love how Italian this sounds, and it really ticks all the right boxes for me. As usual Sanremo is a week of perfect Mediterranean entertainment and while I would have preferred a different winner these guys were high up on my list of perfect Italian representatives. So yeah! Foza Italia, and fuck the haters!

Tom

I didn’t get this song at all when I first saw a clip of it, but it makes more sense when you understand the message behind it. Even then I find it unoriginal in it’s message. Without LED screens to project the imagery this songs needs the casual viewer will dismiss this.
