Romania confirm participation for 2019

TVR the national broadcaster of Romania has confirmed their participation for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv.

Tel Aviv 2019 is within budget

TVR’s board of directors have agreed Romania’s annual budget for 2019. Further to this, it includes funds to be allocated for their Eurovision participation in Tel Aviv. Therefore Romania joins more than 30 other countries who have so far confirmed for 2019.

However it is not yet known what method of selection will be used to choose their entry. Although it is likely TVR will stick with their usual format Selecția Națională. Last time around the Romanian broadcaster revamped Selecția Națională into a six show rival to Sweden’s Melodifestivalen. Touring the national final around various cities across the country, including visiting the salt mine of Salina Turda.

Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest

Next year will mark Romania’s 20th official appearance in the contest since their debut in 1994. However the Balkan nation first tried to enter in 1993, but fell short in the pre-qualifying round. During the semi-final era Romania has remained one of the most consistent Eurovision nations. Yet they still await their maiden victory. Their best results came in 2005 and 2010 with two third place finishes. Firstly, Luminița Anghel and Sistem with Let Me Try and secondly, Paula Seling and Ovi with Playing With Fire.

Earlier this year it was female fronted rock band The Humans flying the Romanian flag in Lisbon with Goodbye. Unfortunately it became Romania’s first non-qualification in the semi-finals. Finishing in the dreaded 11th place in the second semi-final with 107 points. Just four points behind Hungary in 10th place.

My first Eurovision memory was watching 1994 as a hatchling. I've been tapping my talons to the bops and bangers from Europe and beyond ever since! I finally spread my wings to attending the contest in Lisbon 2018 and am now a regular at many events and national finals - especially my regular nest at Eesti Laul.
