According to an announcement made by CyBC, Cyprus will be hosting one of the news conferences held ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest in April 2019.
Conference to take place in April
Reportedly, the European Broadcasting Union has selected Cyprus as the hosts for the news conference. The event will take place in April 2019 in the city of Limassol. Over 100 journalists from 30 countries will attend the event. The Contacts Meeting is an event to discuss the exchange of news. It is not associated with the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv in 2019.
Panikos Hadjipanagi, the news director of CyBC and member of the EBU committee, suggested that Cyprus hosted the news conference. The EBU unanimously selected Cyprus to be the host. Besides the island, the other candidates for hosting the conference were Austria and Norway.
Cyprus gets to host in 2019 afterall!
Cyprus was one of the big favorites to win Eurovision 2018 with Eleni Foureira’s “Fuego”. Ahead of the grand final, Finance Minister Harris Georgiades stated that the country would be willing to host the contest in case of a victory. However, Foureira lost to Israel with Netta’s “Toy” and therefore Cyprus lost their chances for hosting their first Eurovision event (besides the Junior contest).
But that wasn’t ultimately the case; when rumors sparked that Israel wouldn’t be allowed to host Eurovision 2019 in controversial Jerusalem, Cyprus became one of the possible alternative hosts. Nevertheless, Israel announced about a week ago that they would be hosting the contest in Tel Aviv.
Are you happy the event will take place in Cyprus? Do you think Cyprus will finally get to host Eurovision sometime soon? What is your favourite Cypriot entry at Eurovision so far?
