Following the release of details of the complex preparations for Germany’s Unser Lied, the workshop stage is officially underway. The aim of the workshops is to determine the final list of singers ahead of the forthcoming songwriting camps.
The workshops began yesterday (September 28th) in the Maarwegstudio2 in Cologne-Braunsfeld. Twenty singers were invited to this stage, having been shortlisted from over 1,000 submissions. The acts were the highest rated out of a list of 50, as ranked by a 20-member international expert jury.
Until Tuesday (October 2nd), the acts will each record a 90 second clip of them showcasing their style and vocal capabilities. These clips will then be used by jurors to select ‘between eight and ten’ acts to take part in the national final in early 2019. This marks an increase from the six competing acts for Unser Lied 2018, which was won by Michael Schulte.
Songs before Christmas
The selection of songs will not be determined until the finalised list of competing artists is decided. Though songs had already been submitted when applications opened, the official writing workshops are due to take place in November. Final selection of songs for the selection should be finished and produced before Christmas.
Thomas Schreiber, the Head of Entertainment for NDR, has yet to finalise all the details for the national final. When asked when the show itself will take place, he stated “the show will not be too early, nor too late before the Head of Delegation Meeting in Israel.” The exact date for Unser Lied 2019 remains unknown, but is expected to be in February.
Artists reveal also underway
German Eurovision site Prinz ESC were once again invited by NDR to cover the workshop from the ground. The site will be posting daily updates through a series called ‘Inside Eurovision Workshop 2018’. In addition to reporting the overall mood and format of the workshops, they will also be revealing the participants.
Today, they posted the first three confirmed participants in the workshops. These are ‘The Voice of Germany’ alum BB Thomaz, London-based singer-songwriter Sebastian Schub and YouTuber Nicole Cross. The rest of the workshop participants are due to be revealed in the coming days.
