Lithuania: Submission window for Eurovizijos 2019 opens

The Lithuanian broadcaster LRT announces further details for Eurovizijos 2019 and that the final will take place 23rd February.

Eurovizijos 2019 format details

Last month it was reported that Lithuania was reducing their selection show Eurovizijos to eight shows. Now more details for the format have been revealed by LRT and Head of Delegation, Audrius Giržadas. Concluding on 10th December, the song submission period for the national final is open. This is open to songwriters and performers who can apply online here. Further documentation on the terms and conditions for the process are also provided. In short there are three possible ways to enter the national final. These are as follows:

  • Songwriters entering their orginal composition – they can also suggest an artist that would best match with their work.
  • Performers with a song.
  • Also performers without a song.

Furthermore the following conditions have been stipulated, as well as the usual contest rules:

  • The performer must be a Lithuanian citizen. However songwriters can be of any nationality.
  • The songs cannot have been published before 1st September.
  • Additionally the song must not have been performed publicly.
  • Songs must not exceed 3 minutes in length.

Once the entry window closes the jury will then narrow down the candidates and songs progressing to the live shows. These names of the artists and songs will be presented on the broadcasters webpage on 12th December. Beginning on 5th January, Eurovizijos 2019 will consist of 8 weekly shows and eliminations. The winner will be chosen in the final which will conclude on 23rd February. Thus it will be an early selection for Lithuania in 2019 ahead of their participation in the Tel Aviv contest.

Looking ahead to Tel Aviv

Earlier this year Ieva Zasimauskaitė took to the Lisbon stage and took Lithuania back to qualification and the left side of scoreboard, finishing 12th with When We’re Old. Buoyed by the success, thoughts have turned to building on this in the 64th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Tel Aviv. Suggesting what can be expected from Lithuania in 2019, Audrius Giržadas had this to say:

I have no doubt that last year there were new names in Lithuania that were able to introduce themselves to a large audience. We definitely have songs that could capture not only Lithuania. We promise to both sides – the songs and artists – to show the best possible prospects.

My first Eurovision memory was watching 1994 as a hatchling. I've been tapping my talons to the bops and bangers from Europe and beyond ever since! I finally spread my wings to attending the contest in Lisbon 2018 and am now a regular at many events and national finals - especially my regular nest at Eesti Laul.
