The Scoop

Valters Fridenbergs passed away – aged 30

Sad news are coming from Latvia this morning as Valters Fridenbergs, Latvias entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 and famous Latvian singer, lost his fight against cancer. He was only 30 years old.

The war is now over

Valters battled with cancer for more than two years. During that time he went through three chemotherapy cycles, as well as one operation. Last year he asked the public for financial help. People raised 132.000 € which helped him get therapy from January to April in Germany.

Valters is best known for being 50% of the duo Walters & Kazha, who represented Latvia back in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 and finished 5th with their entry “The War Is Not Over”.

He tried to represent Latvia again in 2009, but did not make it through. He was the Latvian spokesperson in 2012. Moreover, he was part of the Latvian commentary from 2011 to 2017.

His friend and colleague, Kārlis Būmeisters, who he shared the 2005 Eurovision experience with, wrote on Twitter:

Such a beautiful day, so deep sorrow. My brother, who I have known for as long as myself, is now gone. Let the wind blow you up.

It will be very short.

Our thoughts at ESCXTRA are with his family and friends and we wish them strength in this hard time.

Hey, I'm Dominik from Germany. Watched my first Eurovision in 2003 and I was in love right away! Attended my first contest in 2011 and every contest since 2013. The same happened with Melodifestivalen. Started watching in 2006 and been to every final since 2017 and try to make it to at least one heat each year, too. After all, Melodifestivalen is the real deal ♥
