Malta has released the official video for Ela Mangion’s entry for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018! “Marchin’ On” is due to compete against 19 other entries in Minsk next month.
Back in September, we reported that Malta had selected Ela out of 16 entrants in Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018. This was Malta’s first Junior Eurovision national final since 2010 to have original songs competing for the ticket. The talented 12-year-old co-wrote the song along with Cyprian Cassar and Emil Calleja Bayliss.
The entry is one of the more mature songs of the year, which is reflected by the sleek video. Seemingly shot in a one-take style, the video references pressing social issues including bullying, family breakdown and the refugee crisis. Could Malta be bringing these sentiments to Minsk? If so, how will they avoid breeching EBU rules regarding politicization?
Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest
Malta debuted at the first Junior Eurovision Song Contest back in 2003 with Sarah Harrison, placing 7th. They have participated 13 times so far, only missing out in 2011 and 2012. Since returning to the contest in 2013, they have enjoyed consistently good results, never missing out on a top 10 placing. They have won the contest twice, in 2013 with Gaia Cauchi and 2015 with Destiny Chukunyere. In 2017 Gianluca Cilia represented Malta with the energetic “Dawra tond”, finishing 9th with 107 points. Out of their 13 entries so far, they have made the top 10 eight times.
