🇫🇮 UMK21 participants to be revealed on January 13

Almost a week earlier than previously reported

The Finnish broadcaster Yle has changed the date for announcing the seven participants who will take part in Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2021, the country’s national selection for Eurovision Song Contest.

Who might be taking part?

Yle will reveal the seven participants of UMK21 on January 13 in a live stream. Earlier the chairperson of the pre-jury Tapio Hakanen told that many well-known artists sent their songs to Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2021.

These include those who have previously represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest, artists who have taken part in Vain elämää (the Finnish version of Beste Zangers) and artists who have won the Finnish equivalent for the Grammy’s, the Emma awards.

Tapio Hakanen also says that among the applicants were some of Finland’s most potential music exports, indie artists praised by music critics and some energetic rock bands. He believes the line-up will be the best we have seen in the Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu history. Next year the UMK celebrates its tenth edition. Finland will select their Eurovision 2021 representative on February 20th.

Aksel Kankaanranta, who was chosen to represent Finland at Eurovision Song Contest 2020, said he didn’t send in a song. Before he expressed hopes to represent Finland again in 2021, but after all didn’t send a song in. He said this is mainly about the uncertainty of the contest happening in 2021.
