Breaking Taboos! X Factor Malta kicks off a nationwide search

The quest for their next Eurovision representative begins

Auditions for X Factor Malta are ongoing as the small island nation goes through the process of finalizing the lineup of hopefuls for the upcoming season of the show.
In addition to winning the chance to represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, the winner will also get signed to Sony Music Italy in order to jump start an international music career.

X Factor Malta Requirements

  • All artists must be sixteen years of age or older by 1st May 2019
  • Each performance may have up to six people on stage
  • All solo artists must be of Maltese nationality or hold dual citizenship, one which being Maltese. If an act includes more than one performer, only the lead artist needs to fulfill this nationality/citizenship requirement.

A Nationwide Search

Things are getting serious as the application process has ended and one of the submissions will be the next Maltese Eurovision representative. This past weekend in the PAVI Shopping Complex in Malta the first pop up booth auditions took place in order to narrow down the applicants to a lucky few.
The pop up booths are a part of the nationwide search and will be traveling all across Malta in the next few weeks in order to help interested participants fill in the application forms and perform in an initial auditions process.

Malta’s Eurovision Journey

Malta debuted at the contest in 1971, but only took part three times before 1991. Since then, the country has finished second twice but has never won the contest.
In the recent years Malta has failed to qualify to the final three times, in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Ira Losco took the country to the final in 2016 and finished 12th. However, their 2018 story finishes on a less fortunate note as Christabelle’s “Taboo” failed to reach the final and finished 13th in the semifinal.

Do you think that this chance will bring back Malta back to the Eurovision final? Was it a smart move on TVM’s behalf to replace the Malta Song Festival with an X Factor nationwide search in order to find their next representative? What is your favorite Maltese Eurovision entry?

  1. I mean if Ambers comment that XFactor is about finding a unique, attention grabbing performer is correct, then I say they\’re in with a shout 👀 Eurovision is more than a song contest after all
