Belgium confirm Eurovision 2023 participation

VRT take back the country's reins for 2023

VRT, Belgium’s Flemish-speaking broadcaster, has confirmed that Belgium will participate in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, after qualifying for the final for the second time in a row. Jérémie Makiese represented Belgium at this year’s contest with “Miss You”, finishing in 19th place with 64 points.

Eurosong to return?

The Belgian broadcaster confirmed their participation to the contest to ESCTodayjoining other countries who had already confirmed their participation in next year’s contest. The selection method that will be used to select the Belgian entry has not yet been confirmed. However, Belgian media have reported that VRT is considering returning to a national selection format to select their entry.

The Eurosong national final was last used to select Belgium’s entry in 2016, when Laura Tesoro won the selection and flew the flag for Belgium in Stockholm. Niels Destadsbader has been reported as a potential host for the selection after former host Peter Van de Veire stepped down from his morning radio show on MNM Radio.

Whoever is selected to represent Belgium at Eurovision 2023 could potentially become the host entry. British newspaper The Guardian is suggesting that the European Union are looking at a joint bid to counter bids by UK cities to host Eurovision 2023. The Belgian capital Brussels has been reported as a potential host city for any EU bid.
