Luca Hänni to represent Switzerland in Tel Aviv?

Luca Hänni is the latest artist to be rumoured to be the artist that will represent Switzerland next year. While SRF has already announced their selection format, rumours want Hänni to be the singer that will represent the country in Tel Aviv.

Luca for Switzerland?

Even if SRF has already announced that their entry will be officially revealed in March 2019, there are rumours that Luca Hänni will be the artist to represent the country in the upcoming contest. The rumours sparked when the official SRF account for Eurovision followed the artist on Twitter. The singer has previously expressed interest in competing in Eurovision. Specifically, the singer was asked back in 2015 and he said:

When the call comes Yes? No? I do not know yet! Actually I think it would be a cool thing.

Who is Luca Hänni?

Luca Hänni is a Swiss singer-songwriter and model. He rose to recognition through his participation in the ninth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDD). He managed to win the competition, making him the first non-German artist to win. Since then, he released multiple albums and singles. His debut single ‘Don’t Think About Me’ was #1 in Switzerland, Austria and Germany while his debut album My Name Is Luca saw similar success, topping the charts in Switzerland and Austria. His most recent releases include singles ‘Powder’ and ‘Signs’. Furthermore, Luca Hänni previously made an appearance in the contest when he presented the Swiss jury results back in 2017.

While SRF hasn’t revealed anything about their selected entry, it has been confirmed that their entry will be announced sometime in March. Their selection process is currently underway; the broadcaster has narrowed down the submissions to 5 final songs which will be reviewed by various producers and singers.

Switzerland in Eurovision

Switzerland has been part of the competition since the very first contest back in 1956, which they also hosted. They have missed only four contests so far: 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2003.

Apart from the first hosts of the competition, they were also the first to win it, when Lys Assia won in 1956 with the song ‘Refrain’. However, that wasn’t their only victory as their second victory came in 1988 with Celine Dion and the song ‘Ne partez pas sans moi’.

However, Switzerland has been also unlucky throughout the competition’s history, having placed last a total of 9 times; 5 times in a Final and 4 times in a Semi-Final. Meanwhile, their recent run in the contest hasn’t been quite successful, having qualified only three times from the Semi-Final since its introduction: in 2005, 2011 and 2014.

Dimitris Ioannou

I'm Dimitris, from Cyprus. Eurovision has been a big part of my life for so long now. My first memories of the contest go back to 2005, which was a special year as Greece had won with Helena Paparizou. But 2009 was truly the first year I became a die-hard Eurofan, which is why that year holds a special place in my heart.
