M I H A I is back

Mihai Trăistariu represented Romania in Eurovision Song Contest 2006 in Athens with “Tornerò” and finished fourth.

Since then he has taken part in Romania’s national selection every year since 2016. In 2017 he finished second with “I Won’t Surrender“. This year he competed with “Heaven” and finished seventh in the final.

Other returning acts include Nicola, who represented the country in 2003 with “Don’t Break My Heart“. The song finished on tenth place.

Also returning is Dan Bittman. Dan represented Romania in 1996 and placed 21st with “Dincolo de nori“. Other familiar names returning to Romania’s national selection are Xandra, who finished ninth in the final this year with “Try“, the rockband Echoes, who also competed in this year’s final and finished 11th with “Mirror” and Vaida, who won the televote in 2014 but finished second behind Paula Seling & Ovi.

Two semifinals and a final

In 2018 Romania hosted five semifinals all over the country with 60 songs taking part. Despite the massive national selection, they failed to qualify to the final in Lisbon after finishing eleventh in the semifinal.

Next year Selecția Națională will only have two semifinals. The semifinals will take place in Arad and Iași, with Bucharest hosting the final. The slogan of the contest will be “Împlinește visul!”, fulfill the dream.

National juries will choose the finalists together with the televoters. The national jury will pick five finalists from each semifinal and televoters get to save one more act to the final. In the final international jury will help to select the winner. The broadcaster TVR can also select one wildcard act to the final from the songs that don’t qualify from the semifinals.

Sami Luukela

I started watching Eurovision back in 2006, when I was only 10 and couldn't stay up to see Lordi winning. I attended my first contest in 2013 in Malmö. I'm studying journalism and I love music — you will probably never see me without my headphones on.
