Our #ESC250 votes – Part 6: Lisa, Nathan P & Tom O

#7: Ani Lorak – Shady Lady (Ukraine 2008)

Still in Great Yarmouth, I mean Belgrade, we move onto what I believe is the real winner of 2008. *Double head nod.* Ever the masters of a kitchen-sinking performance, Ukraine and Ani gave it everything. A flawless routine, light boxes and a song title I strongly identify with. Again this would have won if 2008 wasn’t so heavy on female uptempo songs.

#6: Stella Mwangi – Haba Haba (Norway 2011)

What is robbed in Swahili? Because Stella not qualifying is, in my opinion, the biggest travesty in Eurovision history! My favourite entry of 2011. This song warms the cockles of my dark soul. It is three minutes of pure joy. I challenge you to not tap your feet to those tropical African rhythms and copy Stella’s amazing arm-ography.

#5: Ivi Adamou – La La Love (Cyprus 2012)

Back to Baku again for another slice of Summer. Ivi finishing only 16th is quite frankly criminal. That breakdown and fierce choreography is up there as the best ten seconds in Eurovision. The Mediterranean duo of Greece and Cyprus are at their best when they send female bangers. Apparently twenty into ten isn’t good Maths. Otherwise there would be a lot more in this list.

#4: Loreen – Euphoria (Sweden 2012)

So it seems I liked 2012 a LOT. One of THE all time defining entries of Eurovision history to round out my picks from that year. My wig flew to Sweden when I watched ‘Euphoria’ for the first time in Melodifestivalen. Loreen cleared our skin, made the crops grow and temporarily at least, made people see the contest in a different light. She gave hope that ‘Eurovision songs’ can be seen as just ‘songs’, that can be marketable and succeed outside the contest.

Lisa Bird

My first Eurovision memory was watching 1994 as a hatchling. I've been tapping my talons to the bops and bangers from Europe and beyond ever since! I finally spread my wings to attending the contest in Lisbon 2018 and am now a regular at many events and national finals - especially my regular nest at Eesti Laul.
