Georgian broadcaster GPB will premiere Georgian Idol tonight! This will determine the song and artist which will represent them in Tel Aviv as the show will run for several weeks every Saturday night.
The power is in Georgia’s hands
Georgia’s Eurovision 2019 representative will be decided via a four member jury panel as well as the Georgian public. The jury consists of:
- Tinatin Berdzenishvili (GPB Director of Media and Communications Department)
- Zaza Shengelia (President of Bravo Record Studio)
- Stephane Mghebrishvili (Musician and Singer)
- Natia Todua (Took part in Germany’s national selection last year)
One of the jury members, Tinatin Berdzenishvili, believes that involving the public is the best way to decide on a representative for Eurovision
We have been looking for the mechanism to choose a contender to represent Georgia at the Eurovision Song Contest for a long time. There were many mechanisms and options including an internal selection by GPB. However, we believe that the involvement of the public in the selection of the Georgian representative will be the best way to select our Eurovision act.
How to watch Georgian Idol
The first episode of Georgian Idol begins at 19:00 CET (22:00 local time) via GPB 1’s livestream here.
Georgia in Eurovision
Georgia debuted back in 2007 and has received moderate results since. Their best result comes from 2010 and 2011 respectively where they finished 9th. Most recently, Ethno Jazz Band Iriao represented them in Lisbon with the song “For You”. This proved to be unsuccessful, as they failed to qualify for the Grand Final.
