X Factor Malta – Live Show 2 recap

All the groups eliminated

The final showdown

Unfortunately all beginnings must come to an end and so the public had their say, which saw three acts left in the bottom three and facing elimination. Sadly for Xtreme, being first on proved to be their undoing. Receiving the fewest votes and automatically leaving the competition in 10th place.

Therefore in the sing-off it was a straight fight between the only remaining Group, 4th Line and Ben Purplle from the Overs category. Much to the disapproval of the mentor of the groups, Alexandra Alden, who resolutely declared, “since the sacrilege has to go on.” When emotionally introducing her remaining act. Ben performed Goo Goo Dolls hit ‘Iris’ making his case with the appropriate line “I don’t want to go home right now.” Whilst 4th Line channelled their inner Whitney Houston with ‘Queen of the Night’.

Of course in the judges vote, Alexandra and Ray Mercieca backed their own acts. Which left the decision in the hands of Ira Losco and Ira’s manager Howard Keith Debono. Unable to agree and with Alexandra reminding them that 4th Line could be Malta’s first soul group, the verdict was taken to deadlock. Sadly this meant we said goodbye to 4th Line and it now means there are no groups remaining in the competition. Closing with the iconic line, “Really? … Really? This is what you do to the groups?”, we feel for Alexandra Alden and uphill struggles the category seems to have in reality competitions around the world.

On Sunday we get another week closer to finding out who will represent Malta on the Eurovision stage in Tel Aviv. With eight acts remaining the competition is hotting up. Those remaining are as follows:

  • (The Girls) – Kelsey Ballante, Michela Pace, Nicole Frendo
  • (The Boys) – Luke Chappell, Norbert, Owen Leuellen
  • (The Overs) – Ben Purplle, Petra

My first Eurovision memory was watching 1994 as a hatchling. I've been tapping my talons to the bops and bangers from Europe and beyond ever since! I finally spread my wings to attending the contest in Lisbon 2018 and am now a regular at many events and national finals - especially my regular nest at Eesti Laul.
