ESCXTRA: Live from Turin🇮🇹 Italy

LIVE DAY 8 REVIEW: Italy bring a minimal, etherial performance to Pala Olimpico

The duo are set to make the most of their home advantage.

ESCXTRA.com are live for day 8 of rehearsals ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 taking place at the Pala Olimpico in Turin, Italy!

It’s time for the second rehearsals for the Big Five, the countries already qualified for the Grand Final! The countries rehearsing today, in chronological order, are France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain and Germany. Remember: The Big Five will also draw their halves today!

The latest artists to rehearse are Mahmood & Blanco from Italy who are performing the song ”Brividi”.

Rehearsal review

Stage presentation

This is one of the most refined performances that we’ve seen so far. The performance features minimal LEDs, and is lit by white spotlights which shoot outwards from behind the duo. The camerawork is strong and captures a sense of intimacy and wistfulness.

Before you think it might be too simple, Italy reveals itself as one of very few countries (along with Belgium and Israel) to use the large lighting rig that lowers from the ceiling.

With home advantage, the atmosphere in the hall will further elevate.

Costumes and styling

The styling is simple but very effective; Mahmood is in a black/navy blue suit (cannot tell), and Blanco is wearing a loose-fitting matching white open-buttoned (cotton?) shirt and trouser combo. The contrast is very visually pleasing.

Vocal quality

Blanco had in-ear problems in his first run, and missed a cue, but once this was fixed, the vocal was much improved for the second run. Mahmood’s falsetto is sounding a little thin in the chorus, so I would have preferred some support from him.

Overall impression

Even with this being their first actual rehearsal in mind, I don’t see this winning at this stage. However, with the MASSIVE improvement between their first run and their third, I still firmly see this as another potential top 5 finish for Italy.
