MAID on their You Decide entry: ‘We wanted to bring atmosphere to it’

We chat to Kat and Blythe from the trio about the meaning of 'Freaks' and their musical theatre backgrounds!

Earlier this week, the BBC announced the six acts that will be taking part in a re-formatted version of Eurovision: You Decide next month. We also got to hear the songs, alongside biographies for each of the acts competing for the British ticket to Tel Aviv.

At Wednesday’s Eurovision: You Decide press event, ESCXTRA’s Oliver Lewis spoke to Kat and Blythe from MAID about their entry “Freaks”. The trio formed after meeting in drama school and working in the West End together. In this interview, they discuss the dark nature of their version of the song, musical theatre and tips from Jade Ewan!

In this new format, there are three songs, each sang by two acts, who will ‘battle’ head-to-head in order to advance to the final stage. In this final stage, an expert jury and televote will select the UK’s Eurovision entrant!

Ever since I saw Helena Paparizou's triumph at Eurovision in 2005 (at the tender age of 6), I have been crazy about Eurovision. From the regional native language bops and shrieky female-led balladry to the sophisticated avant garde pop songs and chart-friendly EDM, I love everything about this cultural phenomenon. I'm currently working as a Delivery Manager in a software development team.
