New theme music for Eurovision 2021

Sietse Bakker, the executive producer for Eurovision, has revealed that the theme music that the host delegation originally planned for the 2020 contest is being scrapped. It will not be used for the Eurovision 2021 theme music.

Speaking on the Euro Trip podcast, Bakker revealed that there have been many changes to the plans for the contest. These are changes from the original 2020 plans. One of these is the theme music. This is what Bakker said when directly asked on the subject:

“When we started anew in September, we put everything on the table and asked do we want to keep this? For a lot of things the answer was yes, because we believed in it.”

“We also realised we needed to rethink certain elements, because it’s different times, and with those times, it’s only appropriate to tell a different story.”

Changes described include a change to the artwork as well as the theme music. The theme music for 2020 won’t be used, as the chosen 2021 theme music has been deemed better for the circumstances of 2021.

Bakker also talked about more some of the already announced changes, including the green room plans, and experiences of being the executive producer. Listen to the full interview from 24:38 below:

Some plans are the same

As reported recently, young Dutch DJ Pieter Gabriel will compose the track for the Eurovision flag parade as was also planned in 2020. However, the change of theme music means that there are also fresh ideas. The contest organisers have been going over the scrapped plans for last year, evaluating what will work, and what could use improvement. Apparently, the theme music was one of the latter.

For examples of previous theme music, the following video contains a selection of the themes used from 2008 to 2019:
