Eurovision Trivia: Crowning Hatred

Last week, the quiz themed around Ukraine, and now we have to face their sad withdrawal. But no time to mope over that, this weekend saw a huge number of songs selected, with many more just around the corner. It’s fortunate this quiz is on Wednesdays, we get to spread out the madness over two weeks fairly evenly I’d say, especially now that midweek reveals start popping up, like Cyprus yesterday. Anyway, the contest is really starting to shape itself up into a set of songs worth loving, no matter what musical styles you like. There is something for everybody. Especially now Iceland have selected, and Serbia’s ‘crown’ made for a good combination title pun. Anyway, quiz about revealed songs. Take it away.

Every question in this quiz is related to ESCXtra articles published during the last week. Maybe also a few days either side. Perhaps it was something being reported, maybe it is some information that our writers left in the article. Very occasionally it’ll require a little bit of Eurovision knowledge outside of that. The majority of the answers will have been on this website very recently.

In any case, I hope you’ll join us and have an attempt at the very latest in Eurovision trivia. It’ll also serve as a useful reminder of the headlines you have been reading this week.

The biggest highlight of the past week was quite obviously, objectively, and with no possible debate or opinion on the matter, Hatari winning in Iceland. What rather... aggressive phrase does their song title (Hatrið mun sigra) mean in English?

Correct! Wrong!

The question master a tad biased? No sir.Really quite a cool title though, even if it will get me some strange looks yelling 'Hate Will Prevail' on final night. Yes of course it's going to qualify, come on now. It losing out is not an option.

Okay, okay, some of you are quite excited about Replay. This has been written by Alex P who also wrote 'Fuego' and which other Cypriot entry?

Correct! Wrong!

He does have that certain sound he likes to specialise in. Especially since he's also worked with the likes of Elena Paparizou and Anna Vissi in the past.

Denmark sadly lost viewers for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix this year. Is it still the most viewed program on Danish television?

Correct! Wrong!

It is, with a comedy-drama series Badehollet very close behind. But as our article on the matter stated, it's the lowest figures for the national final since 2008. Will this mean apathy for the Danish entry in Tel Aviv?

In Portugal, which separate vote did Conan Osiris win?

Correct! Wrong!

Portugal at least are behind their entry in all the ways they could have been. How will that affect their fortunes?

Norway's Keiino are bringing some Norwegian folk to Eurovision. Their joik singer Fred Buljo thanked the Melodi Grand Prix crowd for his victory in his native language, which is?

Correct! Wrong!

Sami, the other official language in Norway, whose culture is the traditional home of the joiking musical style. Very looking forward to seeing this in Eurovision.

In Finland, 'Look Away' was chosen to be the Finnish entry by public and international juries. Which of these countries wasn't part of the jury?

Correct! Wrong!

Poor Estonia cannot into Nordic.

Anna Odobescu won in Moldova, she is bringing 'Stay' to the Eurovision stage. Which act from another country already selected for Eurovision performed at the Moldovan final?

Correct! Wrong!

From Serbia, Nezena Bozovic will be representing the Balkan nation. She didn't win the Serbian televote, so where did she place?

Nevena Bozovic
Correct! Wrong!

She secured victory with the Serbian juries quite convincingly, which allowed her to take the win.

Lynda Woodruff is returning for this year's Melodifestivalen final! How long has it been since we last saw Sarah Dawn Finer's comedy character in a Eurovision-related production?

Correct! Wrong!

The last time she did her routine was for Melodifestivalen 2016. Doesn't feel that long, does it?

Oto Nemsadze has won in Georgia, and will be performing... how do you spell his song name again?

Correct! Wrong!

The Georgian phrase means 'Go Ahead' if you were wondering.
