The Scoop🇮🇪 Ireland

🇮🇪 Liam Reilly passed away at the age of 65

The start of the new year wasn’t as lucky for everyone. We are sad to report that Laim Reilly died at the age of 65.

Career & Eurovision

Liam kicked off his singing career in 1978 as a member of Bagatelle. The group was known for their songs “Second Violin”, “Leeson Street Lady” and “Summer in Dublin” and influenced the beginnings of U2, by their own admission. The band reformed in 1992 and returned to tour in 2010.

After spending some years in the US, the Irish singer returned to his home country. In 1989 he took part in the Irish preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest in Lausanne. He finished second in that preselection. Liam didn’t give up and tried again one year later. 1990 was apparently his lucky year as he got to represent Ireland with piano ballad “Somewhere In Europe”. With this entry he kicked off Ireland’s glorious decade by finishing joint second with France. Both countries received a total of 132 points. They got beaten by Toto Cotugno from Italy.

One year later in 1991, Liam Reilly returned as the composer of Kim Jackson’s entry “Could It Be That I’m In Love”. She finished joint 10th with the United Kingdom.

The entire ESCXTRA.com Team’s thoughts are with his friends and family in these difficult times.
