Cyprus still undecided on their Eurovision 2022 entry?

Is Cyprus set to send another uptempo pop song to Eurovision?

You may recall that last summer was rife with rumours about Cyprus’ Eurovision 2021 representative. This year, by comparison, it’s been a rather quiet news cycle for the Mediterranean island. Despite early rumours of Evangelia and Tania Breazou, it has this week been reported that CyBC have yet to decide their Eurovision 2022 entry.

As reported by EurovisionFun, the editor-in-chief of TV Mania magazine has claimed on daytime TV show With love Christiana that Cyprus’ entry of Eurovision 2022 has not been decided yet. In the Alpha TV interview, Konstantinos Hampalis stated that the Cypriot broadcaster plans to choose the song first, and then the artist.

So far, although there is a potential song on the table, it has not been confirmed. However, it is likely that the artist will once again come from Panik Records, the label behind Eleni Foureira and Elena Tsagrinou. Mr Hampalis hinted that the artist is also likely to be a new talent on the roster, with a dance entry.

He also reiterated that the broadcaster still plans to host a televised selection in 2023, as previously reported.

Historically, Cyprus has been among the first countries to confirm their artists. In the meantime, check out our editorial on what we would like to see from Cyprus at Eurovision 2022.

Cyprus at Eurovision 2021

Back in November 2020, Elena Tsagrinou was announced as Cyprus’ 2021 representative. “El Diablo” boasted an international team, from the writers to the styling and staging. Due to misconceptions about the song’s message, the entry attracted backlash from Cyprus’ conservative Orthodox community. Despite this, the song has become one of the most successful Eurovision songs of 2021, charting on Billboard and holding a licensing deal with Sony Music

In Rotterdam, she qualified from semi-final one in 6th, before finishing 16th in the Grand Final with 94 points. The song has since amassed over 30 million streams on Spotify.
