Discussions for Eurovision 2023 to start this Friday

In a press conference yesterday, Mykola Cherotytsky from Ukrainian broadcaster UA:PBC, revealed that the discussions with the EBU about hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 would start this Friday.

After Ukraine won the Grand Final last Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky showed his pride and determination to host the participants and visitors of Eurovision in Ukrainian Mariupol. Free, peaceful and rebuilt!”

However, with the ongoing war following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the organisers are facing unprecedented challenges. Substantial discussions will focus about the exceptional financial and infrastructural issues for next year, as well as the question of security.

Cherotytsky confirmed that this year’s edition had set record viewing rates on TV and on digital platforms, which shows the keen interest of the country for Eurovision.

However, he also underlined the difficulties lying ahead: “I am saying once again that the security factor is important and the final decision will be taken together with the European Broadcasting Union. It will be a difficult negotiation, I am already sure of that.”

Adding to the financial tension, Cherotytsky reminded that Ukraine had to provide a guarantee of 15 million euro in 2017 in case Ukraine could not host the contest after the annexation of Crimea by Russia.

Since Saturday’s Grand Final, several countries, like Spain or the Netherlands, have offered to provide support or even host the contest in case Ukraine was not able to.
