Graham Norton to feature in ‘Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga’

The film will be released via Netflix on June 26th

Recently, it was announced that the Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga would be released on June 26th. The release date was originally supposed to coincide with the final of Eurovision 2020. However, the postponement came due to the cancelation of the contest due to COVID-19 pandemic. As the release date approaches, we now know that BBC Eurovision commentator Graham Norton will be making an appearance.

According to The Daily Star, Norton will be playing the role…of a Eurovision commentator in the film. Considering he has been commentating the Grand Final of Eurovision for the BBC for the past 11 years (since the 2009 contest), this role shouldn’t be a challenge to him.

On the night of what was supposed to be the Grand Final, Netflix released a teaser of the film. This came in the form of the song ‘Volcano Man’, which features the vocals of Melodifestivalen alum Molly Sandén.

More about the film

The film was announced as early as 2018, when Will Ferrell was spotted in Lisbon as he researched the contest in preparation for the project. However, when interviewed, he revealed that his Swedish wife introduced him to the contest back in 1999.

Filming took place in various locations, including Edinburgh, Scotland (which hosted the contest back in 1972), Tel Aviv, Israel (where the producers filmed some audience shots during the 2019 contest) and in Iceland, where the ‘Volcano Man’ video was filmed.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga boasts a star-studded cast. Will Ferrell will be staring alongside Rachel McAdams, Demi Lovato, Dan Stevens and Piers Brosnan.

When aspiring musicians Lars (Will Ferrell) and Sigrit (Rachel McAdams) are given the opportunity of a lifetime to represent their country at the world’s biggest song competition, they finally have a chance to prove that any dream is a dream worth fighting for.

A synopsis for the film from Netflix

Netflix and Eurovision

In anticipation of the release of the film, Netflix acquired the rights to broadcast the 2019 edition of the contest last July. They also acquired the rights to the 2020 contest, but for obvious reasons, we won’t be expecting that to turn up on the platform any time soon. It was reported that Netflix were sponsoring Iceland’s participation for the 2020 contest. Currently, we do not know if this sponsorship will carry over into next year’s contest.
