Eurovision Trivia: Rankings, Reviews and Revamps

For two months now, Eurovision fandom enters a period of intense discussion around the songs, as we survey the field. Minor changes and live performances come and go throughout this period, but the major players, the songs and the performers, are all known. Speculation about their success chances runs rife, reviews come from everywhere (including on this site, see our Xtra Files series) Hence this week’s questions reflect that first push towards gaining an idea as to what May’s contest might look like. Rankings of the entries on social media currently, the first reviews with full knowledge of the field, and the first post-deadline revamps.

Every question in this quiz is related to ESCXtra articles published during the last week. Maybe also a few days either side. Perhaps it was something being reported, maybe it is some information that our writers left in the article. Very occasionally it’ll require a little bit of Eurovision knowledge outside of that. The majority of the answers will have been on this website very recently.

In any case, I hope you’ll join us and have an attempt at the very latest in Eurovision trivia. It’ll also serve as a useful reminder of the headlines you have been reading this week.

Minor technical note: I’ve noticed that sometimes the quizzes do not work in that you are unable to click on any of the answers. If this has happened to you, please try changing browsers or updating them, this tends to fix the problem.

As of March 15th, what entry is winning the ranking system on My Eurovision Scoreboard, who've teamed up with ESCXtra to provide reports on their data?

Correct! Wrong!

All of those answers are in the top 10, but Arcade is almost over 10,000 points ahead of its nearest rival, that being Soldi. A popular victory for the Netherlands?

Another entry was top of another list: as of 17 March what was the most played Eurovision entry on Spotify?

Correct! Wrong!

Mahmood has 30 million streams, way ahead of everyone else. Note that future ESCXtra rankings will be decided by new plays to make it fair to all entries.

Poland's Tulia are one of the latest acts to announce for the London Eurovision party. What famous song did they first rise to fame by covering?

Tulia
Correct! Wrong!

They're quite versatile, they've also covered Metallica.

Darude is joining us for London Eurovision Party too with his entry 'Look Away'. What is the name of his collaborator?

Correct! Wrong!

We at ESCXtra started our Xtra Files by reviewing Australia's Zero Gravity. What genre did one of our reviewers categorise this quite... controversial song as?

Kate Miller-Heidke
Correct! Wrong!

Doing more questions about the content of the song is very appealing so thank you to our team (and Tim, whose comment I used) to provide something concrete as an answer. This is seeing so many elements of a song are subjective. Even if you aren't reading those articles (and I recommend you do, look up our Xtra Files), the intent is that if you have heard the song, you should have been able to answer it correctly.

France's Bilal, in our Xtra Files was slammed for Roi's lyrics. Which of these potentially bad lyrics, some of which were highlighted by our team... is fake, not appearing in Roi at all?

Bilal Hassani
Correct! Wrong!

For clarity, the fake was of the questionmaster's doing, taking a remark that summed up the song rather than the intent being to present the correct answer as a lyric. Indeed, Costa's remark was actually intended as a pithy summary of Roi's lyrical content.

The final of our three entries reviewed so far by the Xtra Files is Lithuania. Which national final entry should Lithuania have sent, according to most of our reviewers?

Jurijus Veklenko
The correct answer also did extremely well in the Lithuanian selection.
Show hint
Correct! Wrong!

Four of our six reviewers who wrote in-depth comments mentioned that Lithuania would have done much better with Monika Marja. Given they didn't have to mention that at all, seems pretty damning. From a member of the team who isn't even involved (due to his own inadequacies), keep an eye out for future Xtra Files posts, they're great reading.

Paenda is taking a tour of her new album, including her Eurovision entry 'Limits'. So far, where does this tour go?

Correct! Wrong!

So far, she is staying within the borders of her home nation, although she is making a non-tour performance at London as part of the Eurovision Party!

The final theme of this quiz, revamps! Mahmood is revamping his song but has confirmed that the final product WILL contain lines in what language?

Mahmood
Correct! Wrong!

Our reported article was that he would not use English. Which is noteworthy for reporting but not so much trivia. Of course, he already had lines in his song in Arabic, along with the majority of the body being Italian. Bit of a trick.

Hungary also has been revamped! In fact, you can listen to it right now on Joci Pápai's Youtube channel. What did he describe as the reason he made changes to it?

Correct! Wrong!

Revamps are certainly not mandatory, but apparently Joci is his own worst critic. Very healthy of course, and I'm glad he's used his time to give us an even better experience in May.

Big Eurovision Fanboy
That's right, you've heard all the songs, you've made a ranking, you have your favourites and by ABBA you will make sure they are victorious in May. As much as one person can do. Maybe you're going to the event itself! Your knowledge is certainly up there.
Eurovision Part-Timer
You maybe don't know everything about Eurovision this year and that's okay. Many people save the surprise for the show itself, and maybe you're among them. That is the sensible thing to do, right?
Eurovision Fan
You've heard quite a few of the songs, and you're really looking forward to this year's event but maybe you haven't heard them all. Or some aspects of the national finals slipped you by. That's quite okay, it'd be some sort of weirdo who would research all the answers to these questions anyway. Like the person who set the questions.
