This is such a wonderfully confusing entry. It’s very 2022 by feeling exactly like 1999 on acid. These guys have the experience, they have the song, they have the fan base. I just wonder whether Australia has the guts to actually send this. Though, judging the past NF winners Down Under – the more unique the better, so hey ho, I’m here for this progressive metal Eurovision special to make its way to Turin.

Prog at Eurovision? That would be something. My music taste outside of the contest includes some prog rock & metal so this is very much up my street. Deep guitar riffs, electronic sounds and powerful vocals make for a great song. Most importantly it doesn’t do anything too ‘out there’ to make it less accessible to a wider audience. After Maneskin’s success, it’s natural we would see more rock entries this year. But such is the diversity of rock music, this song is proof you can send a rock song without being seen to copy last year’s winner.

“What an interesting mix of genres! That somehow work together mind you. Now I do prefer to listen to other songs from Aus Decides this year, but I still love this song. It’s a song you can have a dance to, or belt out at the top of your lungs if you feel like it. Is it the strongest, most competitive song of the bunch? No. But it’s got the fanbase there, so televote will not be an issue.

My only question is if it’s got enough jury appeal. Personally, I think other songs in the selection have better jury appeal so the question will be can Voyager get far enough in the televote to offset any jury issues. Despite all that, if we do end up selecting this, considering all that Semi Final 2 has to offer so far I think it will be a very competitive entry for us.”

After several years since the last Australia Decides you would think they would be desperate to party. Thank god Voyager got the memo! I had heard of the band previously and it didn’t seem to my taste. However, they really said, “oi mate! How about this ripper?” There is so much depth in the production in how they combine metal and electronic beats. This makes ‘Dreamer’ very accessible to wider audiences. With high octane staging to match the song, this could easily challenge for the victory and continue Australia’s recent past of eclectic styles that showcase the broad diversity of their music scene.
