Rehearsal review

Rehearsing right now inside the Rotterdam Ahoy is Efendi, performing “Mata Hari” for Azerbaijan. We will continue to update this article as each run through takes place, so make sure to keep refreshing for the most up-to-date review!

The Azerbaijani performance begins with an LED backdrop showing ancient-style monuments with a gold orb in the centre behind Efendi. The ancient monuments transform into pinks and blues as Efendi is joined by four female dancers. Both the dancers and Efendi wear similar black matching outfits. As we progress towards the first chorus, the backdrop is covered in very realistic looking fire imagery during which we are given a wide shot of the stage which is very effective.

Into the chorus, we see the LED transform into various types of eastern-style symbols including a snake whilst Efendi and her dancers perform quite simple choreography as seen in the “Mata Hari” music video. During the pre-chorus chant, the lights on the performers turn black and white to match the frantic nature of the backing beat. At the end of the performance, we see the fire return to the backdrop with an eye symbol in the centre. Efendi’s vocals are solid throughout.

Rehearsal video clip
