Melodifestivalen 2019 submissions open in August

28 songs will compete in next year's edition

Swedish broadcaster SVT have announced that submissions for Melodifestivalen 2019 will open at the end of August.

SVT: ‘We look forward to a new season’

In a post made on SVT’s official website, the broadcaster has announced a public call for songs.  From Friday 31 August, interested songwriters will be able to upload their submissions during a 3 week window which closes on Monday 17th September.
The event producer, Christer Bjorkman shared his views on the open call for songs.

As always, diversity and variety is what we want and this is why we call for songs in different languages, genres and styles.

No change in number of competing songs

The broadcaster have also confirmed that the number of competing entries will remain the same as in recent years.  A specially chosen panel will select 14 songs received via public submissions, while another 14 will be chosen by SVT themselves – either from the same submission pool or through invitation.
In 2015, SVT reduced the number of selected entries from 32 to 28.  The broadcaster explained that the reduction would gaurantee a grand final with the highest quality of songs.

Chasing Ireland’s Eurovision record

Following their victory in 2015, executive producer, Bjorkman openly revealed that his main goal is to overtake Ireland’s current Eurovision record of 7 wins.

Since their second victory of the decade, Sweden have maintained a top 10 placing at each contest.  In Lisbon this year,  Benjamin Ingrosso placed 7th in the grand final with his funky uptempo number ‘Dance You Off’.

The dates and chosen cities for next year’s competition will be to be announced in the Autumn. Read the complete rules for Melodifestivalen 2019 here.
