Quite the list of contenders who saw Xtra reviews this last week, wasn’t it? The Dutch, the Swiss and the Italians are gearing up for a big battle in May and all of them have questions in this quiz. So that’s all the contenders, and the United Kingdom. In this week’s quiz you can find questions about those that are most popular in fan communities prior to the contest. This time, entries there are entries from Serbia, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, United Kingdom and Romania, so follow those links to remind yourself of what we thought about them. It will help you in some questions, maybe not all.
Therefore, every question in this quiz is related to ESCXtra articles published during the last week. Maybe also a few days either side. Maybe it’s some information that our writers left in the article. Sometimes it’ll require a little bit of Eurovision knowledge outside of that. The majority of the answers will have been on this website very recently.
In any case, I hope you’ll join us and have an attempt at the very latest in Eurovision trivia. It’ll also serve as a useful reminder of the songs you’ve been listening to.
Minor technical note: I’ve noticed that sometimes the quizzes do not work in that you are unable to click on any of the answers. If this has happened to you, please try changing browsers, using a computer instead of mobile or updating them, this tends to fix the problem.
Serbia's song Kruna has been described as a "Balkan ballad". Which of these entries from previous years would you say is a traditional "Balkan ballad"?
Zeljko is a master of traditional Balkan ballads. While My Friend was a ballad certainly, it wasn't in the traditional Balkan style (and also was in English, Balkan ballads don't HAVE to be in a traditional Balkan language, indeed Kruna itself contains English, but usually they are in a Eurovision context).Interesting thing about Moje 3, is that one of its members this year is the Serbian entrant! Nevena has returned with a very different song from the group's effort, very much in the Balkan style. And it's pretty wonderful.
Duncan Laurence's Arcade is a huge favourite with its well-produced ballad. Where is Duncan in the music video that gives that package an extra edge of class?
Ester Peony's On A Sunday went through quite the controversy when it was selected due to scoring low on the televote but winning despite that, ahead of songs that received ten times the televote. Which of the Romanian songs listed here didn't get more televotes than On A Sunday?
That song came 8th, the highest one not to beat On A Sunday on televotes. Still, best of luck to Romania in getting more televotes on the continental stage.
What standout sound is used in the chorus of Mahmood's Soldi?
Croatia was railed by our reviewers in no small part due to the big involvement of a songwriter who helped write Roko's The Dream. Who?
I regret not getting involved for the Xtra Files reviews even more after that Jacques Houdek slamming - he's unironically one of the best recent things about Eurovision and Roko is no exception. Rest of ESCXtra, let's go.
What lyric does Luca Hänni say that 'She Got Me' doing?
The United Kingdom's Bigger Than Us marks the first time that the UK has sent a solo male singer since...?
The last one was Englebert Humperdinck, quite surprising as solo males, as an act configuration, are very easy to come by and very commonly sent by other countries (of course the same applies to solo females, which the UK has sent a lot of this decade).
Denmark is confirmed to be bringing what, from their eye-catching national final performance to Tel Aviv?
Three of the newest OGAE votes, from Serbia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Estonia, gave 12 points to the Netherlands. Which one didn't, choosing instead to favour Sweden?
Germany held a preview show, 'Songchecks 2019'. Which entry won the approval of Eurovision.de readers?
The German entry was not eligible, and while Germany could well be expected to vote for Netherlands and Switzerland, being neighbours, they chose Italy as their favourite entry of the night.
