Antique announce reunion for “Vi Som Älskar 90-talet”

Antique are back! Greek-Swedish supergroup Antique have announced their one-time reunion for a concert in Göteborg. Helena Paparizou and Nikos Panagiotidis will perform during the Vi Som Älskar 90-talet event, which will take place 13th July.

Dying for a comeback

Fans of Antique have been hoping for a return ever since the band split up in 2003. After they split, Helena Paparizou started a very successful solo career. She won the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2005 for Greece, where she sang “My Number One”.

A while ago, Paparizou already teased a potential comeback for the band. The comeback will take place at a special 90s party in Göteborg. Several big stars from the 90s will feature at the event: Aqua, Vengaboys, Right Said Fred and Markoolio. Familiar Eurovision faces Mendez and Cascada will also perform. The full line-up can be found right here.

Aiming for diaspora

In 1999, Antique were formed. Helena Paparizou and Nikos Panagiotidis teamed up to perform and release pop songs aimed at the Greek diaspora in Sweden. Their first single “Opa Opa” immediately charted as a top five sinlge in Sweden. Later releases such as “Dinata Dinata” and “Moro Mou” also did really well in the charts.

Two years after their foundation in 2001, the Swedish-Greek duo decided to broaden their horizons to their native Greece. Paparizou and Panagiotidis entered the Greek national final for the Eurovision Song Contest, which would take place in Copenhagen later that year. They were relatively unknown in Greece, but still managed to narrowly beat all other competing acts.

At the Eurovision Song Contest, the duo sang “(I Would) Die For You”. It was the starting point for the golden age of Greece at the contest. After not taking part in 1999 and 2000, they made a successful comeback by coming third. It was the first ever podium finish for Greece. Later in the decade, Sakis Rouvas and Kalomira equalled the result by also finishing third. Helena Paparizou herself became Greece’s first ever winner in 2005.

Antique decided to disband in 2003. The members were both aiming to pursue solo careers, which has led to Helena Paparizou being one of Greece’s most popular singers.
