The Saturdays singer Una Healy hints at Eurovision comeback

The Irish singer-songwriter reflects on the success of Sam Ryder and says it would be a dream to write Eurovision entry.

Former Eurovision Song Contest backing vocalist and band member of The Saturdays, Una Healy reveals she would love to take part in the selection process for Ireland and write a hit Eurovision entry.

Is Eurovision on Una Healy’s radar?

Before finding fame with The Saturdays, Una Healy previously performed for TV audiences Europe-wide as part of the Irish delegation for Eurovision 2006 held in Athens, Greece. Back then, Una featured as a backing singer for Brian Kennedy’s entry, ‘Every Song Is A Cry For Love’, which placed 10th in the Grand Final. Since that time, Una has continued to share her support for Ireland’s participation. On several occasions she has also offered her songwriting skills to make a Eurovision comeback. As well as this, RTÉ insiders claimed she was a frontrunner in the 2019 selection process. Now she has expanded further on that suggestion, as well as reflection on the contest itself and the success of Sam Ryder.

I would like to be part of it again in some way, because I did it in 2006. I don’t know if I would like to perform but maybe to write something for it. To write an amazing song, that would be a dream.

Una Healy on the contest…

During the interview with the Irish Mirror, Una raises the recent success of the United Kingdom, to show that all it takes is the right artist and song to hit a chord with the voters. Meanwhile she highlights how Eurovision can be a career starter for many artists. Again referring to the phenomenal rise of Sam Ryder over the last month.

Eurovision is nothing to turn your nose up at. It is a huge launch pad for so many artists. See Sam Ryder there now…He’s talented. It shows the UK to come second in this day and age, you thought that would never happen again but it just proves that the public have a bigger say now with the voting system.

Going a step further, Una commented on the voting system and gave it her blessing as a valid measure of song valuation.

It is a lot fairer so yeah no I would love to do it again. 2006 was a long time ago. If I could have a go at it in some shape or form, I wouldn’t say no.

What about experience?

As one-fifth of The Saturdays, Una Healy achieved 4 top 10 albums and 13 top 10s in the UK charts, as well as reaching number 1 with, ‘What About Us?’. So she knows the ingredients of success! After the band’s hiatus in 2014, Una became a coach on The Voice of Ireland. During her first season she was the winning coach with Patrick Donoghue. Since then Una has shed the pop star image and returned to the singer-songwriter roots she attributes to her musical family. In 2018 she released debut solo album, The Waiting Game, which peaked at 28 in the UK charts. The lead single from the album was the moving ballad, ‘Stay My Love‘. A duet with Sam Palladio, British-born star of US TV drama Nashville.

Following this and with a new Indie-Country vibe, Una remixed the hit single of US Country star, Brett Young, ‘In Case You Didn’t Know‘. Already Una Healy has one Eurovision top 10 placing with Ireland, does she have what it takes to go higher?
