You fancy yourself a Eurovision master? So you think you know… Lithuania? Our country-specific series is returning for the Eurovision off-season, covering the entire history of countries at Eurovision. For Lithuania, there’s a lot to cover, songs, bad entries, entries that people liked.
I do apologise, and also for this being a week behind schedule, but I have found it hard to be a fan of Lithuania, for whatever reason, they very rarely send a song I have any interest in. At least you guys are better than my own UK. So I was dreading this week a bit, and because of an error that deleted my whole quiz, actually ended up delaying it a week, but it turns out, that there’s some rather interesting trivia points in there regardless. Why not test your knowledge on those? I’ll give you results this time!
So You Think You Know… is a series that will arrive each Wednesday, each time focusing on a new active Eurovision country. We are continuing alphabetically and so Malta will be next. In the meantime, how well do you know Lithuania?
What year did Lithuania gain their first Eurovision points?
They only took part, of those options given, in 1994 and 1999, and their entry in 1994 gained zero points, so their first points came in 1999.
Strazdas, the entry that got them their first points, was entered and sung in a rather unusual language. What was this language?
Samogitian is a language from the western side of Lithuania, and is markedly different from standard Lithuanian. To my knowledge, no entries have ever been entered in Esperanto and only one entry each for the two languages of Lithuania's neighbours, Latvia 2004 and Belarus 2017.
Donny Montell, in his first entry in 2012, appeared to have what disability for the first half of his song?
He was wearing a blindfold that he ripped off as the song, called 'Love Is Blind', changed tempo.
Which of these groups has never been mentioned in a Lithuanian Eurovision entry title?
Wolves are quite popular, they've been mentioned in Latvian and Azerbaijani entries to name a couple, but no Lithuanian entries mention them. The Lithuanian entries referenced are all non-qualifiers, 'Eastern European Funk' from 2010, 'Nomads In The Night' from 2008, and 'Run With The Lions' from 2019. Which is a shame as on title quality they should have been shown off.
What is Lithuania's highest finishing position?
Ironically, with the song 'We Are The Winners'. One of the almost universally agreed upon things in Eurovision fandom is that this song is terrible, and at best a joke that was funny for about a minute of its performance. We all await the day Lithuania beats it with a much better song.
What is Andrius' 'Something', from 2013, because of? He's wearing the item(s) in question today.
The somewhat unusual lyrics 'because of the shoes I'm wearing today' always stuck in my mind at the time.
Throughout the 2010s, how many times did Lithuania miss the final?
Four. 2010, 2014, 2017 and 2019, a good qualification record for a country not often talked of as producing contest highlights.
Which country has given Lithuania the most final points overall, aside from their neighbour Latvia?
Ireland and the UK often give Lithuania high points, but Ireland has given 81 while the UK has given only 66. To Latvia's 90. If semi-finals are included, Ireland tops the list even ahead of Latvia. It should be noted that very few of those points are returned from Lithuania to either the UK or Ireland.
In Ieva Zasimauskaitė's performance in 2018, what kind of people appeared as holograms on stage?
Please select 2 correct answers
Two holograms of old couples appeared, and inbetween them, one hologram of children appearing to be the start of their relationship. The whole song is about growing old together.
'This Time' in 2015 had how many couples kissing on stage?
The couples all emerged onto the stage in male-female pairs, but for the climax of the song, where the kiss actually happened, the two backing dancer couples arranged themselves so that it was man kissing man and woman kissing woman.
