Judges and host for X Factor Malta are revealed as auditions begin

On June 20th, the official X Factor Malta Facebook page reported that the four judges for this season of the show would be: Howard Keith, Ira Losco, Alexandra Alden, and Ray Mercieca. The host for this season is Ben Camille.

Howard Keith Debono is the managing director of Jagged House Music Company, a Malta-based company managing acts like The Rifffs MT, The New Victorians, and Eurovision acts like Ira Losco and Michela.

Ira Losco is the most familiar of the four judges for Eurovision fans. She placed 2nd in the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest for Malta with her song “7th Wonder.” She also represented Malta in 2016 with the song “Walk on Water,” placing 12th.

Alexandra Alden is a Maltese singer and songwriter currently living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She was the winner of the LovinMalta award in 2019 and she won the Jong QuiteQuiet singer-songwriter award in 2014 in Delft.

Ray Mercieca has been a legendary singer in Malta for decades. He was one of the first Maltese singers to secure a solo record deal outside the country. In the 1990s, he fronted a band called The Characters. He is currently the front man for The Rifffs.

Ben Camille is also a familiar face to some. He hosted the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Malta’s former national selection for Eurovision, in 2016. More notably, he co-hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest when it was hosted in Malta in 2016.

On June 24th, the first day of filming for the audition round began, according to their Facebook page. The auditions are being filmed in the Esplora Interactive Science Centre in Kalkara, Malta.

Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest

Malta first entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971 when they sent “Marija I-Maltija” by Joe Grech, finishing in last place. After a fifteen year hiatus, Malta experienced a long stretch of success in the 1990s and early 2000s. Their best placing to date is 2nd, achieved in 2002 by Ira Losco with “7th Wonder” and by Chiara with “Angel” in 2005. Their most recent entry was “Chameleon” by Michela in 2019, finishing in 14th with 107 points.
