BBC ALBA, Scotland’s Gaelic-language BBC channel, have confirmed they will not be participating at this November’s Junior Eurovision in Gilwice. There is a chance however Scotland could participate in 2020.
The channel have told esctakeover.com their reason for non-participation is that; “Eurovision Choir represents our [BBC ALBA]’s first involvement in an EBU event and we will be learning from that”. Eurovision Choir of the Year 2019 will be held on August 3rd in Gothenburg, Sweden.
BBC ALBA have stated more discussions regarding EBU events would take place after Eurovision Choir in August. Their aim is to “experience this year and inform future involvements around it”.
Will Scotland make their Junior Eurovision debut in 2020? Welsh broadcaster S4C made their debut at Eurovision Choir of the Year 2017 before debuting at Junior Eurovision in 2018. Also Scotland hosted Eurovision Young Musicians 2018 in Edinburgh with involvement from BBC Scotland. The pathway is certainly there for the country to showcase itself further at Eurovision events.
With the United Kingdom as a whole absent what are your thoughts on Wales and Scotland stepping up at the smaller Eurovision events?
