2016 fan favourite Australian representative Dami Im has revealed that she is yet to decide whether to participate in next year’s Australian Eurovision national selection “Australia Decides”. One of Eurovision’s youngest selection shows is expected to return after a one-year sabbatical after SBS internally selected 2020 victor Montaigne to compensate for the cancellation of the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest.
“Paper Dragon” not deferred to 2022
During the final of Australia Decides 2020, Dami Im revealed live on stage that she would be “throwing her hat in the ring” and participating in Australia Decides 2021. However, once Montaigne’s internal selection for Rotterdam 2021 was confirmed, Dami released what would have been her entry, “Paper Dragon”, rather than defer its release for an extra year to make it eligible for Australia Decides 2022.
Speaking on The Euro Trip by Eurovoix, Dami explained the following:
I honestly don’t know [about Australia Decides 2022]. With everything that’s happening, you just don’t know what’s going to happen. I might do it, I might not. I just want to get a bit closer to it and see how it feels. I’ve done it once, I’d love to be able to do it again but I’m just not sure when.
“Paper Dragon” was the song I was really considering as my Eurovision song. I think it would’ve been such a fun song and so different from “Sound of Silence”.

Dami represented Australia in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in the Swedish capital city of Stockholm. “Sound of silence” was awarded a dominant first place with the professional juries from all over Europe and was also amongst the favourites of the general public earning fourth place in the televote. Overall, she earned her nation a second-place finish which remains the country’s best finish to date.
In 2021, Australia will be represented by Montaigne following the cancellation of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Last year, she was due to perform “Don’t Break Me” after its victory in Australia Decides 2020.
Dami will be in Uluru NT in May 2022 with Jess Mauboy to do a show togather so i really dont think that Dami will do Australia decides as a contestant.
The show is 1 week after EV, but knowing how tiring EV is, i dont think Dami would present herself if she got to go. But never say never. Just unlikeley.
Dami will be in Uluru NT with Jess Mauboy doing a concert in May 2022 so i am pretty sure she wont be competing at EV 2022.
It is really fruitless for Dami to compete at Australia decides if that is the case.
