Rotterdam to invest 15 million in Eurovision 2020 bid

With the host city race heating up, the City Council in Rotterdam has backed the bid book to potentially host Eurovision 2020. A total of 15 million will be invested by the city.

Money talks

The bid was agreed on with a 37 to 8 vote. However, it has been made aware that Animal Party PvdD and Muslim Party NIDA voted against this motion.

On top of the 15 million being invested, a further 1 million will be added by the Province of South Holland. Dieke van Groningen, City Council member for the VVD (aka the Liberals), has said that crowdfunding would be an option for the remaining amount of money in order to host.

Banning Madonna?

Meanwhile, here’s a rather ridiculous motion that came out of the hosting discussion. PVV, the right wing nationalist Freedom Party, insisted on banning Madonna from Rotterdam on the day of the Eurovision 2020 Grand Final. This was tabled because she was “a risk for public order and security and evokes antisemitism”.

Because we don’t want this to happen again, right?

Unsurprisingly, the motion failed to get a majority.

The Netherlands in Eurovision 2019

Duncan Laurence’s win for the country has now brought us to this point, where we are (im)patiently waiting to find out which Dutch city will host Eurovision 2020. Duncan was internally selected to represent The Netherlands this year with the song “Arcade”. He won with 498 points, 27 points ahead of runners-up Italy.
