Lena Katina – ‘Mono’

Well this is a nice treat for New Music Friday. Not one new single, but a whole new album to enjoy! Many will remember Lena as the flame-haired vocalist from Russia’s most famous duo t.A.T.u. Back in 2003 they came in as the hot favourites to win the contest in Riga. They had recently shot to worldwide fame with everyone’s favourite lesbian awakening anthem ‘All Things She Said‘ and that kiss. However they had to settle for third place in one of the tightest results in Eurovision history. The top 3 being separated by just three points!

After that time t.A.T.u. continued to blaze a provocative trail across Europe and were pioneers in bringing Russian music to the West. Still being recognised for their influence by being part of the Moscow 2009 contest interval act and during the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. Since then the duo has split. With Yulia and Lena working on solo projects.

Now Lena returns with new album Mono. A compilation of songs she’s worked on over the past few years and released in time for this Summer. Very appropriate timing as they’re all a seamless transition of electronic and relaxing chill out melodies with Lena’s distinctive vocals. Her first Russian language album. There are 8 songs in total to enjoy below:

Lisa Bird

My first Eurovision memory was watching 1994 as a hatchling. I've been tapping my talons to the bops and bangers from Europe and beyond ever since! I finally spread my wings to attending the contest in Lisbon 2018 and am now a regular at many events and national finals - especially my regular nest at Eesti Laul.
