The Scoop🇵🇱 Poland

🇵🇱 Polish Musicians Union calls for TVP to focus on Polish songwriters for Eurovision

Even though Poland hasn’t officially confirmed their participation in 2022 yet, the entry discussions seem to start already. The Polish Musicians Union has called on TVP to make Polish songwriters entries a priority for the Eurovision Song Contest.

It was revealed that in April right before the Eurovision 2021 TVP got a request from the Polish Musicians Union (Związek Zawodowy Muzyków RP). The members urge the broadcaster to revise and make changes to the Eurovision entry selection process in favour of Polish songwriters works, not foreign ones. As it’s already known, a Swedish team has written and composed the 2021 entry “The Ride”.

Any reaction coming after?

Jacek Kurski, the chairman of TVP, made an official reply to the Union members. He mentioned there that Eurovision Song Contest rules don’t state the country where songwriters should be from. However, he also offered the Polish Musicians Union to submit 15 songs for the upcoming Eurovision entry selection by the end of this year with a hope that there would be a winning one among them.

The mid-June brought another response to this talk. The Union members issued a reply back to Jacek Kurski stating that TVP should organise a transparent and well-promoted competition for potential Eurovision entries instead of the internal selection.

As far as it seems from this interaction between TVP and the Polish Musicians Union, Poland made an indirect confirmation of further participation next year. However, there is no official statement now but still enough time for countries to confirm their willing to take part.

Poland at the Eurovision Song Contest

Poland joined the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 and finished second. Edyta Górniak represented her country that year and second. The country reached the top ten for the second time with Ich Troje finishing seventh in 2003.

Poland does their best to qualify from the semi-finals, however, they managed to get to the Grand Final only in 2008 before withdrawing in 2012 and 2013. After returning in 2014, the country got through for 4 times in a row, failing again afterwards.

Poland never won the contest, however, the country got the winner’s trophy for 2 years in a row at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2018 and 2019.

In 2021 it was announced that Poland will be represented by Rafał Brzozowski with his song “The Ride”. However, the artist didn’t manage to qualify to the Grand Final.
