Maltese broadcaster PBS has announced this afternoon that 14-year-old singer, Eliana Gomez Blanco, will represent the island nation at the 2019 Junior Eurovision Song Contest which will be held in November. Her song for the contest will be revealed at a later date.
“Sto male” – a winning cover!
Eliana was chosen to represent Malta out of 12 finalists in the Maltese national final. The winner was decided by the voting public and a jury panel. The jury panel was made up three former Eurovision alumni:
- Claudia Faniello – represented Malta at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest
- Ela Mangion – represented Malta at the 2018 Junior Eurovision Song Contest
- Deo Grech – OGAE Malta leader and writer of six Malta Song For Europe entries
This year, the acts each performed either an original song or a cover of a famous song to fight for the right to represent Malta at the contest. The top three were as follows:
- Eliana Gomez Blanco – “Sto Male” (originally by Ornella Vanoni)
- Leah Cauchi – “Illejla” (original song)
- Martina Cutajar – “Dynasty” (originally by MIIA)
Who is Eliana Gomez Blanco?
Eliana already has a lot of experience as a singer being a resident singer on a local TV programme in Malta. As well as this, she has also represented the country in multiple international music festivals such as the 2018 Ghanja Tal-Poplu Zghazagh where she won with the song, “Dwell”. Last year, Eliana also competed in the Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest – the selection process for representing Malta at the junior contest.
When Eliana is not singing, her other passions include hairdressing and reading! At school, she is working hard to pursue her dream in becoming a doctor in the future. Eliana believes that you should, “always stay true to your own values and don’t be influenced by others”.
Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest
Malta debuted at the first contest back in 2003, and has only missed two editions of the contest in 2011 and 2012. Malta have won the contest on two occasions in 2013 and 2015 and since returning in 2013, Malta has never finished outside of the top 10. Can Eliana make it a seventh year in the top 10 this year?
Last year, Ela Mangion represented Malta in Minsk with her song “Marchin’ On”. She finished in 5th place with 182 points.
What do you think of Malta’s selection for the contest? Are you looking forward to hearing Eliana’s song?
