Rotterdam 2020

Montenegro provisionally says yes to 2020 participation

Yesterday, Montenegrin broadcaster RTCG confirmed toΒ esctoday.comΒ that Montenegro is among the list of provisional countries performing in Rotterdam 2020.

However, it is important to note that there is still a degree of caution to add the Balkan nation to the list of confirmed broadcasters/nations such as the United Kingdom, who have specified exact details to how an entry will be selected. The deadline to initially apply to the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 passed on the 16th September. However, provisional countries have until the 10th October to withdraw without incurring a financial penalty from the EBU.

Much like the recent news surrounding Ukraine’s participation, the exact methodology to select a potential entrant has yet to be specified by RTCG. That said, Montenegro’s Head of Delegation, Sabrija Vulic, suggested back in May she would like to see an expanded Montevizija with up to 20 entries – up 15 from this year’s format!

Montenegro at the Eurovision Song Contest

Montenegro have competed in the contest as an independent country 11 times, making the final twice. However, in the relatively short time participating in the contest, Montenegro have submitted a diverse range of musical genres and styles. From dub-step to pop-rock, disco-related pelvic thrusts to more wholesome content. Similarly, Montenegro have an almost identical split between songs performed in Montenegrin and English. Despite the adventurous nature of RTCG and the Montenegrin public, the balkan ballad has proved most successful, leading to two qualifications. At the time of writing, Montenegro’s best result is 13th in the final with Knez’s Adio.

This year D Mol represented Montenegro with the song Heaven. Despite a revamp the vocal group failed to qualify, coming 16th in the first semi. It seems 16th is an unlucky number. In the last three years, Montenegro have come 16h in the semi. Can they make the final in 2020?
