We have only just come to the end of the first month in Eurovision 2020-season. On 1 October, we will already know the very first name on the list of Eurovision 2020-participants. Traditionally, the early announcement comes from Belgium!
Who will follow-up Eliot as the new candidate to represent Belgium in Eurovision? Who will wave the Belgian flag on stage in Ahoy Rotterdam? We will know the answer very quickly!
The early birds in Belgium witnessed how Flemish commentator Peter Van De Veire revealed something interesting. Around 7.45 am, he announced that VRT will give away the artist name for Eurovision 2020. He or she will represent Belgium in Eurovision 2020!
Where and when can we follow the announcement?
Broadcaster VRT announced that the artist will be revealed during daily talkshow ‘Vandaag’. A show in which Danira Boukhriss (Belgian spokesperson in 2018) invites famous Belgian people to discuss different topics every day. So on 1 October, starting from 9.50 pm, the news can come out every second. Want to watch the show live? VRT geoblocked its website, but has created an alternative for interested fans outside Belgium! So, if you want to watch the tv-show, just go to één’s Facebook page, they will go live during the ‘Vandaag’ show!
How did the selection procedure go?
Earlier this month, Songfestival.be had an exclusive interview with Gerrit Kerremans. Gerrit is VRT’s music coordinator and one of the selection committee-members. In the interview, Kerremans revealed that they contacted the number one on the list for a participation. That person received a certain time to think about the proposal. Would this early announcement mean that the artist in question said yes? Who do you think Gerrit was talking about back then?
Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 and 2019
Every year, Flemish and Walloon broadcaster swap their responsibility to choose Belgium’s entry for Eurovision. In 2019, Walloon Eliot Vassamillet represented Belgium in the name of RTBF. After some very good results, the broadcaster set the bar very high for Eliot, however he couldn’t rspond to the high expectations. The young singer did not make it to the final with his ‘Wake Up’. He finished only 13th in the first semifinal.
For the last Flemish entry of Belgium, we go back to Lisbon 2018. That year, Sennek represented her country with ‘A Matter Of Time’. While the song received a very positive respons at the very beginning, she struggled to reach the final. She finished 12th in a very strong first semifinal.
