🇪🇪 Eesti Laul 2022 final to take place on February 12

The first Quarterfinal will take place on November 20th!

Last week, ERR, the Estonian public broadcaster, confirmed their Eurovision 2022 participation. They will once again be using Eesti Laul to select their entry. This week, they have confirmed a number of changes for the upcoming selection, including the introduction of quarterfinals and an increase in the number of entries.

ERR, the Estonian public broadcaster, confirmed its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Italy last week. The broadcaster will once again be using the Eesti Laul format to select their entry.

As promised, ERR have now released further details of the selection, including format changes and an earlier-than-usual finale date.

Up to 40 entries for Eesti Laul 2022

Speaking to ETV, Tomi Rahula, the Producer of Eesti Laul, revealed that quarterfinals will be introduced to Eesti Laul 2022. As a result, up to 40 songs will be selected to compete in the selection. A jury will listen blindly to all the submissions, with the aim including an equal number of Estonian- and English-Language entries. The quarterfinalists will be announced by October 27.

At the quarterfinals stage, five songs from each show will progress to the semi-finals. Three of these songs will be chosen by the public, and two by a jury. At the semi-finals, five songs will be chosen for the final from each show. Both semi-finals will have two rounds: winners of the first round will be decided by the jury vote and TV viewers’ phone votes, and winners of the second round will be decided by the viewers’ phone votes.

At the Grand Final, the usual two rounds will return. The first round will determine the acts in the ‘Super Final’ and are determined by 50% jury voting and 50% public vote. At the Super Final, the Estonian representative is chosen by 100% televoting.

Selection to begin in November

With the submissions window now being open until October 20, the full rules have been published by the broadcaster.

The dates of the selection shows are as follows:

  • November 20 – Quarterfinal One
  • November 27 – Quarterfinal Two
  • December 4 – Quarterfinal Three
  • December 11 – Quarterfinal Four
  • February 3 – Semi-Final One
  • February 5 – Semi-Final Two
  • February 12 – Grand Final

In addition, ERR are planning an additional show called ‘Eesti Laulu’, featuring performances from the Super Finalists. There is no date for this show yet, but will likely take place between April and May.

Estonia at Eurovision 2021

In 2020, Estonia selected Uku Suviste to represent Estonia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, with his song ‘What Love Is’, which was written by Uku with Sharon Vaughn and produced by Dimitris Kontopoulos. Unfortunately, the contest was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rather than re-select Uku internally, they instead gave him an invitation to compete in Eesti Laul 2021, which he accepted. In a field of 24 acts, Uku won Eesti Laul for the second year in a row with “The Lucky One”. However, this success failed to translate in Rotterdam. Performing 2nd in semi-final two, he finished 13th with 58 points.
