Portugal: Joana Alemida’s “Vem Comigo (Come With Me)” released

Another song about the environment from this year's Junior Eurovision

Two weeks ago, Portuguese broadcaster RTP confirmed that Joana Almeida will be representing Portugal at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Gliwice-Silesia. Joana is known to Portuguese audiences by winning ‘Gala Internacional dos Pequenos Cantores da Figueira da Foz‘, which is one of the popular children’s singing competition in Portugal. The official music video for her entry “Vem Comigo (Come With Me)” has now been released.

“Vem Comigo (Come With Me)” is a song about hope, hope that the younger generation can make a positive environmental impact, despite the danger that the earth is currently facing. The entry was composed by João Pedro Coimbra, who was invited by RTP to write and compose the song.

Junior Eurovision 2019

This year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be held in the Gliwice Arena, Poland, on the 24th November 2019. Excitingly, it marks the first time Poland will host a music-based Eurovision event! Last year, Roksana Węgiel brought Poland its first Eurovision-adjacent win with “Anyone I Want To Be”. Roksana has since been announced to be hosting the contest, along with Ida Nowakowska and Aleksander Sikora.

The following nineteen countries have confirmed their participation, and most have now revealed their entries!

Portugal at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Portugal debuted at the Junior contest in 2006, which took place in Bucharest, Romania. RTP initially used the Festival da Canção Junior format to select their entries. This was a junior version of Festival da Canção, the festival used to select their entries for the adult contest. After competing in 2006 and 2007, they withdrew from the 2008 contest, before returning in 2017.

Last year, Portugal selected their Junior Eurovision entry through a national selection ‘Juniores de Portugal’.  Rita Laranjeira managed to win the contest and represented Portugal with her song “Gosto de Tudo (Já Não Gosto de Nada)“. In Minsk, she managed to finish 18th, with 42 points from the online vote.

Ever since I saw Helena Paparizou's triumph at Eurovision in 2005 (at the tender age of 6), I have been crazy about Eurovision. From the regional native language bops and shrieky female-led balladry to the sophisticated avant garde pop songs and chart-friendly EDM, I love everything about this cultural phenomenon. I'm currently working as a Delivery Manager in a software development team.
