Today is New Music Friday and the release of Jessica Mauboy’s new album Hilda. Darwin’s darling gave us love in Eurovision 2018 and now she’s embracing her love of music again with this intimate collection of songs.
Been Waiting for Hilda
It has been six years since Jessica released her last studio album Beautiful. Although starring in The Secret Daughter and two Eurovision appearances have kept her busy in that time. But now she’s back and it’s been worth the wait, with this introspective look at life and love. The album takes its name from Jessica’s own middle name, passed on from her maternal grandmother. The woman whose own life was tragically cut short, but left a story to be told and inspired Jessica to release Hilda.
“This special album is dedicated to anyone still learning about themselves, discovering things you thought weren’t possible, finding your solid ground, struggling with love, body and mind or maybe afraid to show the real you.”Jessica Mauboy, (Twitter)
Over the past few weeks we’ve slowly been discovering more about Hilda. From the releases of ‘Sunday’, ‘Blessing’, ‘Little Things’, ‘Just Like You’ and ‘Jealous’. Each adding more to the story and showing there’s a song and a message that everyone can find relatable. Each of the 14 tracks on the album has been co-written by Jessica. Thus these are stories of Jessica’s own personal journey to becoming the woman she is today. Working together with the DNA Songs team of Anthony Egizii and David Musumeci. The pair have collaborated with Jessica since her debut album Been Waitin. Of course the duo also produced her Eurovision entry ‘We Got Love’.
At its heart we have Jessica going back to the purity of her soul roots. Most noticeable in the standout ballad of ‘Little Things’. With her raw emotion on show for the song dedicated to her grandmother. However among this collective you will songs packed with a flavour of genres. From the pop bangers ‘Selfish’, that accompanies the album’s release, ‘Come Runnin”, ‘Wish You Well’ and 80s electronica ‘Better’. To the RnB cool of ‘Sunday’, ‘Jealous’, ‘Get Back Up’ and ‘Never Ever’. Along with the chart ready EDM-tinged anthem ‘Who We’re Meant To Be’.

Jessica Mauboy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018
Danish broadcaster DR invited Australia as an interval act for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. Ultimately, SBS decided to send Jessica Mauboy. She performed ‘Sea of Flags‘ during the second Semi-Final to positive reception, in showing all the cultural passion Australia could bring to Europe’s annual party. Following this SBS became invited guests of the contest thereafter.
However, it seems that Jessica had unfinished business with the contest. She was selected to represent Australia in 2018, with the pop anthem ‘We Got Love‘. During her participation in Lisbon, she managed to bring Australia to the Grand Final a fourth time. Placing 20th overall with 99 points, with all the joy and gusto we’ve come to know and love from the nicest girl in Australian pop.
