Earlier this month, Australia’s broadcaster, SBS, revealed that Casey Donovan and Vanessa Amorosi were the first two acts in the Australian Eurovision selection process Eurovision: Australia Decides.
While it’s still very early in the Eurovision 2020 season (Australia Decides itself is still almost three months away), the first song for the Australian national final was released last week. Here’s the catch: no one knows what it is.
On Instagram, Amorosi revealed that her Australia Decides entry is one of the tracks on her newest album, entitled Back to Love, which was released on November 9th. One of the lead tracks on the album, “Hello Me,” was released with a music video in October.
All 11 tracks on this album fall between three and four minutes. Her song “Gimme Your Love” is already a perfect Eurovision length at 3:01, and “Personal” is close, coming in at 3:07. “Lessons of Love,” another favorite to be the official choice, is a respectable 3:10. Overall, all of the songs, with some mild editing, could be whittled down to Eurovision length.
Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest
Australia debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015, as a “guest country” to celebrate the contest’s 60th anniversary. Guy Sebastian was selected to represent the country, with “Tonight Again”, which finished in 5th place with 196 points.
Australia were again invited to take part in the contest in 2016, and have been every year since. This year, SBS and the EBU confirmed that Australia’s participation in the contest has been secured until 2023.
Australia is one of two countries, along with Ukraine, to have never failed to qualify for the final. Their most successful entry came in 2016, when “Sound of Silence” by Dami Im came second, behind Jamala’s “1944.” Their most recent entry is “Zero Gravity” by Kate Miller-Heidke, which placed 9th in the final in Tel Aviv.
