More than half of 126 songs submitted to Latvia’s national Eurovision selection, Supernova, came in the final day.
Yesterday marked the deadline of the song submission for the sixth season of “Supernova”. The selection that has produced such Eurovision successes as Aminata and Justs, received 126 songs – which is a record number for the selection.
Ilze Jansone, the producer of the show, tells that there is a diverse range of genres, including schlager, joke entries, and rock. Jansone notes that there are considerably more songs in Latvian than in other years, with many female newcomers applying to the contest.
The Supernova team is expecting to have initial auditions in December, and the songs will be available online in early January.
Might KATO represent Latvia?
Supernova’s Facebook page hints that KATO, who was Aminata’s and Justs’ backing vocalist might enter the contest. If true, it might highlight a common trend for the producers of the show to favour some artists over others.
KATO has recently gained considerable popularity in Latvia performing songs in Latvian. Could she be the first Latvian artist since Fomins & Kleins in 2004 to perform a song in Latvian on the grand Eurovision stage? We will find out on 8th February.
