Vidbir 2023 to take place on December 17

The Eurovision 2023 national selection season is fast approaching, as Ukraine is set to host their national final, Vidbir, to select their representative earlier than usual on December 17.

Vidbir 2023

Ukrainian national broadcaster Suspilne has revealed details of the Ukrainian national selection. Vidbir 2023 is set to take place on 17 December 2022. With this, Ukraine joins Albania in the list of nations hosting a national selection in December. However in December 2021, Albania, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic also hosted December national finals, so this timing may become more commonplace in the future.

Competition details

It is expected that Vidbir 2023 will be held in the capital Kyiv at the Maidan Nezalezhnosti metro station, although this is a tentative venue at the moment. Rehearsals will be held from 14-16 December and the final is set to be televised live on 17 December.

The winner of the competition will represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool in the United Kingdom and will be determined by both a jury and the general public. For the first time in the competition’s history, the public will have the opportunity to choose the members of the jury through online voting.

Whilst there is no official confirmation of the number of entries in Vidbir 2023 yet, MUZVAR, Ukrainian music outlet, suggested back in September that 10 songs will compete for the chance to represent Ukraine in Liverpool next year.

Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest

Out of 17 appearances since their debut at the 2003 contest in Latvia, Ukraine has never failed to qualify for the Grand Final. This makes them the only country to hold a perfect qualification streak at the contest. Ukraine have won Eurovision three times, in 2004, 2016 and 2022, with Ruslana, Jamala and Kalush Orchestra. Earlier this year in Turin, Kalush Orchestra received a total of 631 points, where they also broke the record for the highest number of televoting points in the contest’s history. Despite not hosting Eurovision next year, Ukraine will still automatically qualify for the Grand Final in 2023 in recognition of their win.
