Sandro – the Cypriot representative this year – was in London last week in order to work on the songs for the contest. It has been reported that 5 to 6 songs are currently in the run for the Cypriot entry. One of them will go on to represent the Mediterranean island in Rotterdam this year.
“It won’t be a dance song”
The selection process for the next Cypriot is already underway, and the Cypriot team is close to selecting their song. According to the inteview Sandro gave to Wiwibloggs, there are 5 to 6 songs that are in consideration, but it’s gonna be “a difficult decision” for the team. He described each of the songs as “unique” and that they “cannot be compared to each other”.
When he was asked about the song, Sandro said the following:
“The song is not going to be dance, it’s going to be a heart thing, I’m a very emotional guy, I have a story to tell and I want to help people because I know there are a lot of problems out there. I know a lot of people are dealing with a lot of problems, music is about helping each other, I write music for people who are sad, they just feel alone and that everything is not just happiness. The song has a strong message.
The singer also said that the song will be a combination between Shawn Mendes, James Arthur and Lewis Capaldi.
Who is Sandro Nicolas?
Alessandro Rütten, now known as Sandro Nicolas or just Sandro, was born in Germany to an American father and a Greek mother. He rose to fame when he appeared in two talent shows in Germany: first in Germany’s Got Talent (Das Supertalent) in 2015 and then in The Voice of Germany in 2018.
This year, he took part in New Wave 2019, representing the United States – where he finished in 6th place. Later, he was selected by CyBC to represent the country in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Recently, the singer travelled to Athens after his recording sessions in London. While in Athens, he met with Eleni Foureira and Tamta, the two most recent Cypriot representatives.
What do you think about Cyprus opting to not go for a dance song this year? Do you like the idea of a Shawn Mendes-James Arthur-Lewis Capaldi type song? Are you excited to hear the Cypriot entry?
