Last night saw Arilena Ara win Festivali i Këngës 58 despite Elvana Gjata being a firm fan favourite. Following her victory, Arilena hinted in interviews that “Shaj” might be translated to English for her Eurovision 2020 performance.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?
Albania’s entries for the last two years were sung completely in their mother language and came with respectable results. 2018 saw Eugent Bushpepa’s “Mall” finish 11th in the grand final, while Jonida Maliqi also qualified for Saturday’s show, as “Ktheju Tokës” came 17th overall.
However, Arilena’s “Shaj” may break this pattern. While nothing has been 100% confirmed, the 2020 Albanian representative said that there is a possibility her song will contain English lyrics in the revamp. If this is the case, the title would be changed to “Curse”.
So of course, Eurofans do not seem to be pleased with this…
Despite the negativity over the upcoming revamp, it’s been said that “Shaj” was originally written in English. Due to this, Arilena states that she has more feeling towards the song in the language.
As Twitter user @dlaczegojamamo explains here:
Festivali i Këngës 58
Arilena Ara won Festivali i Këngës 58 with her song “Shaj”. The winner was decided by an expert jury, consisting of Albanian and international members.
Arilena won the ticket to Rotterdam, while fan favourite Elvana Gjata finished second and Sara Bajraktari took third place.
Should Arilena revamp her song to English? Stick to Albanian? Or a bit of both? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
